Early evening, we have the opportunity to see the “Staircase to the Moon”, a natural phenomenon which occurs when a full moon rises over the exposed tidal flats of Roebuck Bay. Hotel: Oaks Resort Broome for 4 nights
Unearth the stories and sights of Broome as our guide leads the way. See the red rocks of Gantheaume Point and the town’s Port with time to wander through the Japanese Cemetery. Dating back to the very early pearling days, the Cemetery bears witness to the close ties Japan established with Broome in the early 20th century. We then head to Chinatown with the jetty and pass by The Sun Pictures building, an open-air theatre owned by the Yamsaki family. We visit the Broome Museum and see the extensive collection of Shinju Matsuri memorabilia including the Shinju Queen crown made of pearls and silver, past Sammy the Dragons, festival programs and commemorative items all at the Broome Museum. After an interesting morning we stop off at Matso’s Brewery, the Kimberley’s award winning microbrewery and a true Broome treasure. After a relaxed lunch and tasting we have the afternoon to ourselves. Tonight our dinner is at Zanders overlooking the beautiful Cable Beach, arriving in time for sunset and the opportunity to ride a camel for those who wish.
Today we discover how the rare and beautiful Australian South Sea Cultured Pearl is produced at the Willie Creek Pearl Farm. Our knowledgeable guide will reveal the intricate processes of today’s modern cultured pearling industry – from the seeding of an oyster to the harvesting and grading of a pearl, right through to the final stunning product on display in the showroom. Our farm tour also includes a Willie Creek boat cruise, a light lunch and time for some retail therapy in the shop. Upon our return to Broome we can enjoy the hotel facilities or join in the festivities. Tonight send your message out to the universe in one of the most symbolic ways possible at The Floating Lantern Matsuri at Gantheume Point. Whatever your message is whether it is personal in memory or general words of encouragement, watch them float in flowing unison with all the other messages into the sunset, a touching moment to be a part of (Lantern additional cost).
*The program for the 2021 Shinju Matsuri Festival has not been released yet. Therefore events cannot be guaranteed over these dates until this information is released. We will then advise so that the itinerary can be updated with the correct events over these dates.
After our late night last night we have a leisurely start to the day. We visit the fascinating attraction, Pearl Luggers. It’s often said that Broome’s pearling industry is as rich in culture as it is in pearls. We’ll be taken through an exciting array of pearling equipment with memorabilia from actual hard hat diving suits to the hand powered pumps which fed precious air to the divers below. To hear the stories first hand is a memorable experience. We now have the rest of the afternoon at leisure to join in festivities of the festival.
