Fitness for the Tour
Christmas Island does not offer a lot of ‘soft touring’, i.e. places that are easy to visit or access. There are a few places, but these are easily covered in a day as you can drive directly to the point of interest. If you plan to have a few days or a week, best to ensure the people in your group have a good level of fitness (or are prepared to happily abstain from some touring to some locations).
The better places of natural interest do require a certain amount of walking, on boardwalks, or loose, rough surfaces. Some walking is required up hills or on steep inclines. People need to have good mobility, stability and flexibility for some of these locations. What might also be considered easy walking under normal conditions may become an issue in the humidity.
If people have joint, breathing or heart issues, these can become exacerbated in the hot and humid conditions. People need to make sure they have taken their medication or have it on them (inhaler) to use if they need to.
We highly encourage guests to bring their own walking sticks if they need them, otherwise we can provide walking sticks if needed. In some cases, we may insist people use a walking stick before they will be permitted to join a walk.
Most trail walks on Christmas Island would be considered Grade 5 in difficulty according to the Australian Walking Track Grading System. Grade 5 includes:
➢Uneven walking surfaces
➢Steps
➢Inclines above a certain gradient
➢No seating or rest areas on many trails
➢Slippery muddy surfaces
➢No handrails or safety structures
Your holiday begins when you are picked up from home and transferred to the airport in a private vehicle. Meet your Kings Tour Manager and fellow passengers and fly to Christmas Island. On arrival into Christmas Island, you will be met at the airport and taken to your accommodation. Once you have settled in, there will be an Island Briefing at the lodge. This evening you will enjoy a beach BBQ at Flying Fish Cove and then return to the hotel.
Hotel: The Sunset for 7 nights
The morning will start with a Continental Breakfast at VQ3 Lodge, opposite The Sunset. You will then be taken on a Christmas Island Orientation Tour where you will discover the local history, culture and be taken to places of interest. You will then stop for lunch at the Local Café. Following lunch, you will take in some breathtaking views as you trek onto the Golf Course Lookout. You will need good mobility for this as, although it is a short walk, it is a steep incline and descent. This will be a fantastic opportunity for seabird spotting as red-footed boobies, frigate birds and golden bosuns glide overhead the picturesque cliff tops. You will then return to the hotel and get ready for dinner at the local restaurant
Following breakfast this morning, you will head off to Lily & Ethel beaches. Take a swim or a walk along the boardwalk between the 2 beaches to view the birds nesting on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Lunch will be a picnic at Lily Beach before returning to town for some rest and relaxation time. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
You will have a leisurely start today as you have the morning free. Enjoy a cooked breakfast at VQ3 Lodge, then you can relax and enjoy the facilities of the property. You will all meet up and head to a local café for lunch before visiting Lizard Lodge where you will learn all about the reptile conservation program. From there continue on to Orphaned Bird feeding program where you will have a rare chance to watch volunteers feed rescued Christmas Island birds and learn about the rehabilitation project. Return to the hotel for a rest before dinner at a local restaurant.
This morning’s walking tour takes you into Hughs Dale Waterfall. One of the only places on the island with flowing water all year round, these rain-forested wetlands are home to mighty Tahitian chestnut trees, blue crabs and an array of rare and endemic species. The Hughs Dale track is a raised boardwalk that leads to a permanent waterfall in the rainforest (good mobility and some endurance required), stopping for morning tea along the way. You will also enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to the hotel for some rest and relaxation. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.
Today you will head out to the Blowholes, where you can walk through towering rainforest and watch seawater rocketing high into the air. Lunch will be a delicious fish lunch served at Flying Fish Cove. With coral reefs surrounding the Island, and an abundance of fish and coral to see just a few metres from the shore, you will have the time of your life on the 2 hour snorkelling boat trip. Return to the hotel for relaxation before dinner at a local restaurant.
After breakfast at the hotel, you will travel to Dolly & Greta Beaches. Dolly is one of the prettiest and most secluded beaches on the island. Walk through the rainforest along a boardwalk for approx. 2kms, you will come to a sandy beach surrounded by overhanging coconut palms and shallow rock pools. Marine turtles nest at both Dolly & Greta beaches so you are bound to come across some on your visit. Morning tea will be provided. You will return to the township for a picnic lunch before heading back to the hotel for relaxation or whatever you decide to do. Being the last night on Christmas Island you will enjoy a farewell dinner this evening.
The morning will be spent visiting Tai Jin House Museum, followed by time for some last minute shopping or souvenir hunting. Lunch will be provided at a local café before transferring to the airport for your flight back to Perth.
