This morning we travel to Penrith where we join the Nepean Belle for a Devonshire tea cruise into the Blue Mountains National Park. The Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler provides a great introduction to the stunning natural mountain gorge scenery of the National Park. After our cruise we take the Great Western Highway into the Blue Mountains. We take the scenic Cliff Drive to Echo Point and the Three Sisters at Katoomba where we stop for a photo opportunity and enjoy some free time to purchase lunch. From here we check into our accommodation for the next two nights.
Hotel: Zig Zag Motel, Lithgow 2 nights
Today we have a full day enjoying the Leura Garden Festival. Our first visit is to Bygone Beautys – the largest private emporium of antiques and collectables in the Blue Mountains. A trove for treasure hunters and all who love a living touch of history. Browse around rooms filled with jewellery, furniture, fine china, dinner services, dolls and toys. There also happens to be 1400 odd teapots on display! We enjoy morning tea here. Leaving Bygone Beautys we will visit the open gardens of the festival. This afternoon we visit the Everglades Gardens, which is one of the most important historic gardens in Australia. After a sensational day we return to our motel and enjoy dinner.
Leaving the Blue Mountains we travel to the Southern Highlands where we enjoy lunch at the Mittagong RSL. We then take a trip down memory lane as we visit the delightful Fairground Follies. Be enchanted by the sights and sounds of this museum, akin to visiting an old-fashioned amusement park with its collection of self-playing instruments and mechanical music, fair organs, street organs and a 100-year-old steam carousel. What a lovely way to end our touring day before continuing on to Canberra.
Hotel: Rydges Capital Hill, Canberra for 4 nights
We get a feel for Canberra this morning with a trip to the lookout at Mount Ainslie. The views across Lake Burley Griffin are magnificent. We now head to Commonwealth Park, the centre of the Floriade Festival. Over 1 million bulbs and annuals are planted each year, depending on the garden bed design. You have the entire morning to enjoy this abundance of bloom and beauty. This afternoon we travel the short distance to the Australian War Memorial. The memorial commemorates the sacrifice of the Australian men and women, who have served in war, through its ceremonial areas, extensive exhibitions and research facilities. We stay to hear the Last Post and closing ceremony, then return to the hotel in time to freshen up for dinner.
We take a scenic drive around the Embassy district before our visit to Parliament House. Located in the heart of Canberra, it is one of the world’s most acclaimed buildings. From here we head to the National Museum of Australia where we have time to purchase lunch before our tour. This afternoon we make our way to Tulip Top Gardens. Behold the glorious display of tulips nestled between hundreds of trees as you walk along the path to the cascading waterfall with classical music wafting in the background. After a magical afternoon wandering around the tulips and enjoying the music wafting through the air in the hidden valley we return to our hotel with many stories to share over dinner.
We arrive at the international renowned National Arboretum Canberra. Created as a place of breathtaking beauty, you’ll experience the world’s largest living collections of rare, endangered and significant trees. The views over Lake Burley Griffin and Government House are sensational! Leaving here we visit Lanyon Homestead and enjoy lunch. Polar opposites of what we have just seen we make our way to visit the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex at Tidbinbilla. For 40 years, the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex has played a key role in the exploration of space as part of NASA’s Deep Space Network. Learn about the amazing work being done by Australians, and the incredible missions that are revealing the secrets of the Universe. Our day complete we head back to our hotel to relax.
Today we have the full day at leisure. Enjoy some personal touring or simply relax in the hotel and enjoy the facilities. Late afternoon we are transferred to the airport for our flight back to Perth. Upon arrival in Perth your driver will be waiting to take you safely home.
