Hotel: Shangri-La Hotel Cairns for 7 nights
We have a relaxed start to the day after our late evening. Boarding the coach we enjoy a sightseeing tour of Cairns followed by lunch in the tropical Botanic Gardens Café. Nestled in the shadow of the Mount Whitfield National Park you will find a myriad of ancient plant life and a number of popular walks to enjoy. The rest of the day is yours to explore Cairns at leisure.
One of the “must do” tours in Cairns is a ride on the historic Kuranda Train for the spectacular ride to the famous, tropical plant clad Kuranda Station. Kuranda is full of arts and craft shops and we have plenty of time to explore the village and purchase lunch. We then board the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, across the rooftop of World Heritage listed rainforest areas and back down to the coastal plain. The views are spectacular. We stop off during our descent to visit a rainforest interpretative centre and for a short walk along a boardwalk through the rainforest. With our touring complete we’ll arrive back at the hotel with plenty of time to relax before dinner.
Our destination today is an area known as the Atherton Tableland. First, we head to Mareeba where we visit Jaques Coffee. Here, we discover the world of coffee and how it is grown by joining one of the guided “Jaques Coffee Plantation Tours”. We farewell Jaques as we head across the range to visit the Curtain Fig Tree and then proceed to The Atherton Tableland which is a rather unique place in Australia and what makes it so special is the combination of its geographic location in the Tropics (between 400 and 1100 metres), its pleasant climate and the volcanic activities which have shaped large parts of its landscape. One of the most dramatic examples of this is Lake Barrine –a beautiful volcanic crater lake. It’s here we enjoy lunch in the Lake Tearooms before a cruise with great commentary.
Another adventure awaits us today in the form of the Daintree Rainforest. We take a cruise on the Daintree River to gain an understanding of this wildlife environment – keep your eyes open for birds, unique plants, tree snakes and of course the estuarine crocodile. Back on dry land we enjoy a delicious tropical lunch before we wind our way through the rainforest to Alexandra Lookout – here we can see spectacular views over the Daintree River estuary, Snapper Island and beyond. Our final stop for the day is Mossman Gorge. Here we hear an indigenous presentation by the traditional owners of the gorge, the Kuku Yalanji people, before boarding our eco shuttle for the transfer into Mossman Gorge. Our local guide will take us for a guided walk, sharing their knowledge of this enchanting rainforest environment. Learn about the fascinating secrets of one of the world’s oldest rainforests.
Set sail to Michaelmas Cay on board Ocean Spirit and discover the sheer magnificence of the Great Barrier Reef. The Cay is a picturesque reef sand island surrounded by magical coral gardens teeming with an incredible diversity of marine life. Immerse yourself in its natural wonder, while listening to our marine biologist’s, ride a semi-submersible vessel for coral viewing and enjoy a delicious smorgasbord luncheon. Some of us might like to get up and personal with a snorkel from the beach. It will be a fabulous day!
This morning we drive south with our first stop being the Babinda Boulders for a photo opportunity. Next stop is at the historic Paronella Park. We enjoy lunch here and time to explore the site before returning to Cairns for some free time. Tonight as we watch the sky transform from blue to red to orange as we sail into the starry night sky. We journey deep into the heart of Trinity Inlet and across the waterfront precinct of Cairns, from the Cruise Liner Terminal to the Esplanade. The water is calm and the night is yours to enjoy, with entertainment and a delicious Buffet dinner featuring some of the region’s best produce, including seafood.
We have a leisurely breakfast before we complete our check-out procedures. We have some free time for some souvenir shopping or to wander through the Reef Precinct before transferring to the Cairns Airport for our flight home to Perth via Sydney. On arrival into Perth your driver will be waiting to take you safely home.
