DARWIN DISCOVERY &THE GHAN EXPEDITION

After breakfast, enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of Darwin with a local expert joining the coach. Discover the city’s unique history, culture, and tropical lifestyle as you explore some of its key landmarks and attractions. Following the tour, there will be time to purchase lunch before returning to the hotel for an afternoon at leisure. This evening, we enjoy a relaxing sunset cruise on Darwin Harbour aboard the Spirit of Darwin. Dine onboard as the sun sets across the water — a quintessential Top End experience.

This morning, we travel out of Darwin to Corroboree Park Tavern for lunch. We then embark on the Original Adelaide River Jumping Croc Cruise. Cruise the Adelaide River aboard the iconic Adelaide River Queen — a purpose-built, air-conditioned vessel offering comfort and adventure in equal measure. Enjoy individual seating, croc-proof glass views, and an open-air upper deck as you watch powerful saltwater crocodiles leap from the water beside the boat. Just an hour from Darwin, this family-owned experience has showcased the Territory’s wild heart since 1985. We return to Darwin with time to freshen up before dinner at the hotel.

Today we journey into the lush tropical wilderness of Litchfield National Park, renowned for its dramatic waterfalls and unique landscapes. Along the way, we view the giant magnetic termite mounds and enjoy photo stops at the spectacular Florence Falls and Wangi Falls. We enjoy lunch at Wangi Falls Café. There is time to take in the scenery and, for those who wish, enjoy a refreshing swim in the Wangi Falls plunge pool. Alternatively, relax in the shaded easy-access viewing areas and simply soak up the natural beauty surrounding us. We make our way back to the hotel for the evening at leisure.

This morning, we discover Darwin’s wartime history with a visit to Stokes Hill Wharf, home to the Bombing of Darwin Experience and Royal Flying Doctor Service Tourist Facility. We continue to the historic Oil Storage Tunnels, offering a fascinating glimpse into WWII infrastructure hidden beneath the cliffs of Darwin. Our day also includes a visit to the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, home to a massive B-52 bomber, military aircraft, and displays exploring Darwin’s important defence history.
Late this afternoon, we visit the iconic Mindil Beach Sunset Market, where you can wander through colourful market stalls and choose from a wide variety of food vendors for dinner at your own pace.

After breakfast, we check out and begin the morning at the beautiful George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, a peaceful tropical oasis featuring shady walkways, historic palms, and seasonal blooms. We then head to Stokes Hill Wharf for one final meal together. We then make our way to the airport for our return flight to Perth. Upon arrival, you are met by your private driver and transferred home — the Kings way.

This morning your adventure awaits. You will be transferred to the Darwin Railway Terminal to begin your journey on the Ghan. Settle into your private cabin and mingle with fellow travellers. When it’s time for lunch, savour the regionally inspired menu accompanied by a selection of all-inclusive wines and beverages, before an early afternoon arrival at the Top End township of Katherine. Cruise through Nitmiluk Gorge’s ancient natural wonders and discover the region’s rich Indigenous culture. Enjoy dinner as the sun sets over the outback, then back in your cabin you’ll find your bed turned down. Fall asleep as the train rolls soothingly onwards.

After your first night on The Ghan, you’ll be greeted by a morning view of the spectacular Red Centre. A full day of excursions awaits you in the outback town of Alice Springs. Return in time to meet the rest of your fellow guests at a spectacular barbeque dinner under a million stars at the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station.

From your morning stop at the outback outpost of Manguri, you’ll venture into the weird and wonderful opal mining township of Coober Pedy, where more than half of the residents live underground. Here, you’ll enjoy a day of discovery, and a gourmet lunch in the most unique of locations: underground. Dinner is served back on the train where you can enjoy a nightcap as your journey continues.

From your cabin window this morning you’ll see a dramatic change in landscape, as the rich ochre tones of the outback make way for the green fields of South Australia. Enjoy a leisurely brunch as you pass through the majestic Flinders Ranges and prepare for your mid-morning arrival into Adelaide, completing one of the world’s great travel experiences. Upon arrival, we will be met by our coach driver who will take us on a brief city tour before arriving at the hotel for our overnight stay. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner at the Strathmore Hotel.

After a leisurely breakfast and check-out, we depart the hotel and transfer to Adelaide Airport for our flight home. Upon arrival in Perth, your driver will be waiting to transfer you home, ending a memorable experience on one of the world’s most renowned rail journeys.
