Arriving at a luxury safari lodge in the middle of the African wilderness is an experience in itself. After travelling through the surrounding landscape, stepping into such a beautiful property feels almost surreal. You are surrounded by nature, yet every comfort has been thoughtfully considered.
From the moment I arrived, I felt completely looked after. I was welcomed with a refreshing hot towel, while the staff took care of my luggage. Before long, everything was arranged, and I could settle into my surroundings without worrying about a thing.
What makes this experience so special is the contrast between the remote setting and the luxurious facilities. You might be miles from the nearest town, yet nothing feels inconvenient. Instead, the entire experience feels effortless.

The day typically begins before sunrise, with tea, coffee and biscuits waiting before the morning game drive. Even at that early hour, having something warm to drink makes getting out of bed much easier.
Then, somewhere out in the bush, there is often another treat waiting. A coffee stop during the drive gives you time to stretch your legs and appreciate the surroundings. There is something special about enjoying a hot drink while surrounded by the African wilderness.
After returning to the lodge, breakfast is served, offering the perfect opportunity to refuel. Lunch follows later, before afternoon tea prepares you for the next adventure.
As the sun begins to set, the experience becomes even more special. Sundowner drinks and nibbles are enjoyed out in the bush, often with breathtaking views. Finally, dinner back at the lodge rounds off another unforgettable day.
Honestly, the food becomes part of the adventure itself. Every meal feels like another experience rather than simply something to tick off your day.
Everything Is Taken Care Of
Another aspect I loved was how effortlessly everything seemed to run. At a luxury safari lodge, the little details are handled behind the scenes. This allows you to focus entirely on enjoying your surroundings.
For example, the housekeeping team services your room while you are out on a game drive. When you return, everything feels fresh, tidy and beautifully prepared. After an early start in the bush, walking back into a refreshed room feels wonderful. It is such a simple detail, yet it adds so much to the overall experience.
Throughout my stay, I never felt the need to organise or manage anything. The staff took care of the details, allowing me to relax completely.

Even when you have spent hours enjoying the lodge’s luxurious comforts, heading out on another drive remains exciting. There is always the possibility of witnessing something extraordinary.

Even when you encounter animals you have already seen, their behaviour can be completely unexpected. Then there are the impalas. I like to think of them as the McDonald’s of safari because they seem to be everywhere! However, even these familiar animals can surprise you. One moment, you might be watching a herd grazing peacefully. The next, something unexpected happens, reminding you that wildlife never follows a script. That unpredictability is part of what makes every drive so exciting. You never know what might be waiting around the next bend. Each outing becomes its own little adventure, filled with anticipation and discovery.
The Ultimate African Safari Experience
A luxury South African safari is so much more than beautiful accommodation and exceptional service. It is the combination of comfort, thoughtful hospitality and extraordinary wildlife encounters. I loved how every detail was taken care of, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the experience. From delicious meals to unexpected animal sightings, each day offered something memorable.

Exploring Hoi An, Vietnam: A Magical Town of Lanterns, Coffee and Culture
There are few places that capture my heart quite like Hoi An, Vietnam. With its charming streets, colourful lanterns and incredible food, this beautiful town feels like something from a fairytale. From the moment I arrived, I fell in love with its relaxed atmosphere and fascinating blend of cultures. Whether I was wandering through the Old Town, sipping coconut coffee or watching the sunset, there was always something special to discover.
If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, Hoi An deserves a place on your itinerary. Here are some of my favourite experiences and reasons why I think this destination is so special.
Wander Through Hoi An’s Beautiful Old Town
One of the first things that captivated me about Hoi An was its beautifully preserved architecture. The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town is full of history, character and charm. Every street seemed to reveal another beautiful building or hidden gem.
I loved seeing the fascinating blend of architectural influences throughout the town. French colonial buildings sit alongside traditional Vietnamese tube houses, Chinese assembly halls and Japanese architectural features. The iconic Japanese Covered Bridge is particularly memorable, reflecting Hoi An’s rich cultural heritage.
As I wandered through the narrow streets, I discovered adorable cafés, boutique shops and colourful buildings at every turn. Many central streets restrict motorbike and car access during designated pedestrian hours. This makes exploring on foot a wonderfully relaxing experience. However, the Old Town becomes even more magical as evening approaches. Hundreds of colourful paper lanterns illuminate the streets, casting a warm glow over the historic buildings. The atmosphere feels romantic, peaceful and almost dreamlike. For me, simply wandering without a particular destination was one of the best ways to experience Hoi An.
Enjoy Hoi An’s Delicious Coconut Coffee
Vietnam is famous for its incredible coffee culture, and I always enjoy discovering local specialities when travelling. From traditional Vietnamese iced coffee to creative modern blends, there is something for every coffee lover. As someone who loves coconut, Hoi An was particularly special to me. Coconut coffee quickly became one of my favourite treats during my stay. Combining strong Vietnamese coffee with creamy coconut milk and ice, this refreshing drink is both sweet and indulgent. I loved stopping at little cafés between exploring the Old Town’s charming streets. It was the perfect excuse to slow down, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a moment of relaxation.
What makes Vietnam’s coffee culture so interesting is its ability to balance tradition with creativity. Hoi An’s coconut coffee perfectly captures this combination. If you love coffee, I would definitely recommend adding it to your must-try list.
Discover Local Life at Hoi An Central Market
Another highlight of my visit was exploring Hoi An Central Market. This bustling market offers a wonderful glimpse into everyday Vietnamese life. It is filled with fresh produce, fragrant spices, colourful ingredients and tempting street food.
As I wandered between the stalls, I enjoyed watching locals shop, prepare ingredients and go about their daily routines. The market was lively, colourful and full of fascinating details.
I also joined a food tour through the market, which made the experience even more memorable. My guide introduced me to different local ingredients and explained how they feature in traditional Vietnamese cooking. I found it incredibly insightful, especially when learning about the flavours behind some of my favourite dishes.
For me, food tours are a fantastic way to understand a destination beyond its main attractions. They offer opportunities to connect with local culture while discovering dishes you might otherwise overlook.
Fall in Love with Hoi An’s Food Scene
The food in Hoi An holds a very special place in my heart. Throughout Vietnam, regional ingredients and cooking traditions create wonderfully diverse culinary experiences. However, I found Hoi An’s food particularly memorable. Fresh seafood, locally grown vegetables and fragrant herbs feature prominently in many dishes. The flavours are vibrant, balanced and delicious, making every meal something to look forward to.
One local speciality I think everyone should try is white rose dumplings. These delicate dumplings are made with translucent rice-flour wrappers and typically filled with seasoned shrimp or pork. Their beautiful appearance gives them their distinctive name. They are usually served with a savoury dipping sauce and crispy shallots. I loved how such a simple dish could feel so special.
Of course, there are plenty of other local dishes worth discovering. From fresh noodle dishes to delicious street food, Hoi An offers something for every appetite. My advice is to arrive hungry and embrace the opportunity to try something new.
Watch the Sunset Along the Thu Bon River
If there is one experience I would recommend to everyone visiting Hoi An, it is strolling along the Thu Bon River at sunset. For me, this is when the town’s magic truly comes alive. As the afternoon light begins to fade, the sky transforms into beautiful shades of gold and pink. Boats drift gently along the water, while colourful lanterns gradually illuminate the surrounding streets.
I found this time of day particularly special because everything seemed to slow down. The river reflected the changing colours, and the atmosphere became wonderfully peaceful despite the crowds.
There is something unforgettable about watching Hoi An transition from daylight into evening. I loved finding a spot beside the river and simply taking everything in.
Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences are not about ticking off attractions. Instead, they are about being present and appreciating where you are. Watching the sunset in Hoi An was one of those moments for me.
Take a Day Trip Beyond Hoi An
Another reason I loved visiting Hoi An was its convenient location. It makes a fantastic base for exploring other parts of central Vietnam. Whether you enjoy history, culture or beach escapes, there are plenty of wonderful day trips to choose from.
Hue is an excellent option for history lovers. As Vietnam’s former imperial capital, it is home to impressive monuments and the historic Imperial City. The Forbidden Purple City is particularly fascinating for anyone interested in Vietnam’s royal past.
Alternatively, My Son Sanctuary offers a completely different experience. Hidden among lush greenery, these ancient temple ruins showcase the remarkable architecture of the Cham civilisation. Dating back over a thousand years, the sanctuary provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history.
For a change of scenery, I would also recommend visiting Da Nang. This lively coastal city combines modern attractions with beautiful sandy beaches. It is an excellent choice if you fancy a little beach time alongside your cultural adventures.
Having these destinations within reach makes Hoi An an ideal base for discovering central Vietnam’s diversity.
Final Thoughts: Why Hoi An Stole My Heart
Hoi An is one of those destinations that stays with you long after you leave. Its charming architecture, vibrant markets, delicious food and colourful lanterns create an experience that feels genuinely special. I loved how easily I could spend my days exploring historic streets, discovering local flavours and enjoying peaceful moments beside the river. Every experience offered something different, yet everything felt connected by the town’s welcoming atmosphere. Whether you are visiting Vietnam for the first time or returning for another adventure, I believe Hoi An is well worth experiencing. Take your time, explore beyond the main streets and embrace the slower pace of life.
Most importantly, save room for coconut coffee, try the local specialities and watch the lanterns glow after sunset. These simple moments were among my favourite memories of Hoi An, and I would happily return for more.

Borneo is a destination that captures your heart, and every visit reveals something new. This incredible island offers extraordinary wildlife, fascinating cultures, beautiful landscapes, and poignant reminders of history. Having visited Borneo for the fourth time, I can honestly say my love for it grows stronger with every trip.
This time, our group of 14 began our adventure in Sandakan, on Sabah’s northeastern coast. From the moment we arrived, we knew we were in for another memorable experience. Our journey would take us from wildlife sanctuaries and historic landmarks to jungle-lined rivers and the magnificent surroundings of Mount Kinabalu.
We settled into the comfortable Sabah Hotel, which provided an excellent base for exploring the area. Sandakan has a fascinating character, combining natural beauty with a rich and sometimes heartbreaking history.
Our first wildlife encounters were particularly exciting. At the reserve, we were fortunate to see proboscis monkeys, with their distinctive noses and wonderfully expressive faces. These unusual primates are native to Borneo and remain one of the island’s most recognisable animals.
Watching them in their natural surroundings was a real treat. Their movements and interactions provided plenty of entertainment for our group. Furthermore, seeing these remarkable creatures reminded us how important conservation efforts are throughout Borneo.
Next, we visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, another unforgettable experience. Seeing orangutans at close quarters was both fascinating and moving. These intelligent animals share many characteristics with humans, making them particularly captivating to observe. The centre plays an important role in rehabilitating orphaned and rescued orangutans. Its work also highlights the challenges facing Borneo’s wildlife.
We also visited the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, where we learned more about these elusive animals. Sun bears are the world’s smallest bear species, yet they have enormous personalities. Their conservation remains vital, particularly as habitat loss continues to threaten their survival.
One of our Sandakan highlights was wandering around Agnes Keith House. This historic wooden home belonged to American author Agnes Newton Keith, who wrote about life in North Borneo. The house provides an intriguing glimpse into the region’s colonial past.
Afterwards lunch was enjoyed at the English Tea House. Perched above the town, this charming establishment offers lovely views and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Together, these visits offered a delightful change of pace from our wildlife adventures. They also helped us appreciate Sandakan’s cultural heritage and its connections with earlier generations.
However, our time in Sandakan also included a deeply poignant experience. We visited the Sandakan War Memorial to honour the Australian and British soldiers who died during the Second World War.
The memorial commemorates those who suffered during the Sandakan prisoner-of-war tragedy and the infamous Death Marches. Thousands of Allied prisoners endured terrible conditions, with very few surviving the ordeal. It was the first time I had visited the memorial, and it was a sobering reminder of the human cost of war. Standing there quietly, we reflected on the courage, suffering, and sacrifice of those involved.
Although our trip was filled with beautiful scenery and exciting wildlife, this visit remained one of its most meaningful moments. History has a powerful way of putting our own travels into perspective.
From Sandakan, we continued our adventure towards the magnificent Kinabatangan River. This region is famous for its extraordinary biodiversity and opportunities to observe wildlife along the water.
For me, this became one of the absolute highlights of our Borneo journey. The river winds through lush jungle, creating a spectacular setting for wildlife watching. Our speedboat rides were tremendous fun, with the riverbanks rushing past on either side. As we travelled deeper into this green wilderness, it was easy to imagine ourselves as Victorian explorers discovering unfamiliar territory.
The scenery was mesmerising, but the wildlife made the experience truly special. Hornbills appeared overhead, their distinctive silhouettes crossing the sky. We also spotted proboscis monkeys resting among the trees and moving through the riverside vegetation.
At other moments, we were delighted to see otters enjoying their watery surroundings. Each bend in the river seemed to offer another opportunity for discovery.
Then came an especially exciting sighting: a couple of orangutans in the distance. Unfortunately, they were rather far away, so we could not appreciate every detail. Nevertheless, spotting these magnificent animals in the wild was thrilling.
The Kinabatangan reminded us that wildlife watching requires patience, luck, and a little perseverance. Animals rarely appear exactly when or where you expect them. Nevertheless, every sighting felt rewarding, and the river journey itself was unforgettable. The combination of rushing water, towering trees, and incredible wildlife made this experience truly magical.
Eventually, we moved on to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s bustling capital city. After spending time surrounded by jungle, arriving in the city offered an interesting contrast.
One particularly memorable excursion took us towards Mount Kinabalu and its wonderful botanical garden. The gardens offered a fascinating introduction to the region’s remarkable plant life. Mount Kinabalu is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, including many species found nowhere else.
Walking among the vegetation was a refreshing experience after our busy travel schedule. It also demonstrated that Borneo’s natural treasures extend far beyond its famous orangutans and monkeys.
We also visited a museum-style cultural attraction featuring traditional tribal houses. This provided valuable insight into Sabah’s diverse indigenous communities and their longstanding traditions. The displays helped me understand more about the different tribes, their customs, and their ways of life. They also explored the region’s head-hunting past, an aspect of history that can seem startling today.
Looking back, our journey offered an extraordinary mixture of experiences. We encountered fascinating animals, explored historic homes, honoured wartime sacrifices, and travelled through some spectacular scenery.
Our group shared plenty of memorable moments along the way. From delicious lunches to thrilling boat rides, there was always something to enjoy.
Yet what makes Borneo so special is the way its different experiences complement one another. One moment, you can be watching orangutans in a rainforest sanctuary. The next, you can be reflecting quietly at a war memorial or learning about indigenous traditions.
Borneo is beautiful, but it is also complex, resilient, and deeply moving. Its wildlife inspires wonder, while its history encourages reflection and respect.
This was my fourth visit, and I left feeling even more attached to this remarkable destination. Each journey reveals something different, giving me fresh reasons to return.
For anyone considering a visit, I would wholeheartedly recommend exploring beyond the usual tourist highlights. Take time to learn about the local culture, appreciate the natural environment, and understand the island’s history.
Most importantly, travel with curiosity and an open mind. Borneo has a wonderful ability to surprise you, whatever your expectations.
As for me, I suspect this will not be my last visit. Borneo has captured my heart, and somehow, I love it more every time I return.
